Varnish

Varnish

In printing, a varnish finish refers to the application of a clear coating or varnish onto the surface of printed materials to enhance their appearance, protection, and durability. The varnish is a transparent or semi-transparent liquid that is applied as a thin layer over the printed surface, providing various benefits depending on the type of varnish used.

Varnish finishes are commonly used in various printed materials, including brochures, catalogs, packaging, book covers, business cards, and promotional materials.

Types of varnishes available:

  • Gloss varnish is a type of varnish that reflects light, making printed photos appear brighter and more vivid. It is commonly used in brochures and flyers to enhance the visual appeal of the printed materials.
  • Matte Varnish: Matte varnish provides a smooth and non-glossy finish. It is often used to soften the appearance of images in printed materials.
  • Silk Varnish: Silk varnish falls between matte and gloss finishes, offering a balanced effect. It is an ideal choice for those who prefer a combination of both matte and glossy attributes.

Machine Sealing: Machine sealing doesn’t visibly alter print products but serves the purpose of applying a protective layer to seal the ink, ensuring durability and safeguarding the printed materials.

As a trade printing specialist, we take each step of any printing project very seriously. The process of creating a varnish involves the following steps:

  • Printing: The printing process is carried out using the chosen printing method, such as offset printing, digital printing, or screen printing. The design and colors are transferred onto the paper or other printing material.
  • Varnish Selection: There are different types of varnishes available for various applications. Common types include gloss varnish, matte varnish, satin varnish, and spot varnish. Gloss varnish adds a shiny and reflective finish, matte varnish creates a non-reflective, smooth surface, and satin varnish falls in between with a semi-gloss appearance. Spot varnish is applied only to specific areas of the design to create emphasis or special effects.
  • Application of Varnish: Once the printing is complete, the varnish is applied over the printed surface. This can be done inline during the printing process (inline varnishing) or as a separate finishing step after the printing is complete (offline varnishing).
  • Drying and Curing: The varnish is allowed to dry or cure, depending on the type of varnish used. Some varnishes dry quickly through air exposure, while others may require additional processes like UV curing to harden and set the coating.
