As a trade printing specialist, we take the thread sewing binding process very seriously, so that your clients’ demands go beyond their expectations.
Here’s an overview of the thread sewing binding process :
- Printing and Collating: Similar to other bookbinding methods, the content of the book is printed on large sheets of paper, usually with multiple pages on each side, known as "signatures." The printed signatures are then collated, meaning they are arranged in the correct page order.
- Folding: Each printed signature is folded along the centerline to create the individual pages. For example, a large sheet with four pages on each side would be folded to create eight individual pages.
- Sewing: The folded signatures are gathered together in the correct order, and holes are punched through the folded spine edge. A strong, durable thread, often made of cotton or linen, is then used to sew through these holes, binding the signatures together.
- Sewing Patterns: There are different sewing patterns or techniques used in thread sewing binding, including the "overcast stitch," "Coptic stitch," "saddle stitch," and others. Each pattern offers different benefits in terms of strength, flexibility, and appearance.
- Attaching Endpapers: After sewing, the endpapers are attached to the inside of the book's cover, just like in other binding methods. Endpapers help to secure the book block (the sewn-together signatures) to the cover.
- Cover Preparation: The book's cover, made of thick cardboard or board, is cut and shaped to the appropriate size to fit the pages. The cover is often covered with book cloth, leather, or other materials to enhance its appearance and durability.
- Attaching Cover: The book block with attached endpapers is then attached to the inside of the cover. The attachment can be achieved through various methods, including gluing or sewing.
- Folding and Pressing: The book is folded and placed in a press to ensure a strong bond between the pages and the cover.
- Finishing (Optional): As with other binding methods, thread-sewn books may undergo additional decorative finishing processes, such as foil stamping, embossing, or applying dust jackets, to enhance their visual appeal.
